![It’s been just over a month since we said goodbye to our dad, our trip leader, and the soul of Grand Canyon Expeditions—Marty Mathis.
For nearly 40 years, he didn’t just guide people down the Colorado River—he invited them into something deeper: connection, wonder, and a love for the Canyon that ran as deep as the river itself. It was never just work for him—the Canyon held his heart, his spirit, and some of the best parts of his life.
If you were lucky enough to know him, you know his laugh, his stories, his fierce work ethic, but it was his kindness—his instinct to care for others before they asked—that made him unforgettable.
The river will keep flowing, and so will we—with Marty in every ripple, every canyon wall, every starlit night on the beach.
Big water and blue skies, Dad. You’ll always be with us, and we will continue to make you proud.

![Walker and Kami are the newest swampers joining the GCE team this season. Walker and Kami met their freshman year at the University of Wyoming their freshman year and have been the best of friends ever since. They came on a GCE trip in 2022 as part of a class with The Haub School at the University of Wyoming. After graduation they worked a season together on the Cache la Poudre river.
